Elevator Installer and Repairer

Elevator Installers and Repairers (also called Elevator Constructors and Mechanics) assemble, install, replace, maintain, and repair elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walkways, and other similar equipment. To become an Elevator Installer or Repairer you must complete an apprenticeship program, be at least 18 years old, and have a High School degree. The apprenticeship program is directed through a joint effort or employers and a union. A trainee will have to complete on the job training along with classroom instruction in Blueprint Reading, Electrical and Electronic Theory, Mathematics, Applications of Physics, and Safety. After their apprenticeship is over, the trainee will be on a probationary period of about 6 months, and then work toward full qualification ( this can last 4 to 5 years). To be fully qualified, you must pass an exam administered by the National Elevator Industry Education Program and some states may require you to pass a licensing exam. High School courses in Mathematics, Physics, and, Electronics will be beneficial. The median earnings of Elevator Installers and Repairers in 2000 was $22.78 an hour.
