Algebra II Recipe: Using Summation Notation
A. Definition

  1. Σ is the summation symbol.
  2. 3 is the lower limit.
  3. 7 is the upper limit.
  4. 2x2 - 1 is the rule.
B. Steps to find the sum.
  1. Substitute the lower limit and each number up to the upper limit into the rule.
  2. Add the expressions with each number being substituted.
  3. Simplify to find the sum.
