Garbage Collector
Garbage collectors, or Refuse
Material Collectors, gather trash, garbage, and recyclables from
houses and businesses along a route. They collect the garbage in their truck
and take it to a dump, landfill, or recycling center. A Garbage Collector also
has to lift and empty garbage cans and recycling bins by hand, and sometimes
operate a hydraulic lift truck that picks up and empties dumpsters. According
to the Occupational Outlook Handbook most employers prefer to hire High School
graduates and the employees will need basic math skills to read procedure
manuals, billing statements, and other papers. Along with collecting and moving
the garbage, the collectors need to know a little about maintenance of large
machines and trucks. In 2000 the median hourly earnings of a garbage collector
was $11.83.
